Beautiful and sturdy...with one minor flaw
I just received my TR-344 legs for Christmas yesterday and am over the moon with regard to the build quality. These legs are on a par with the Acratech GP ballhead I’m using in terms of machining and finish. There are few things I find as satisfying as a beautifully crafted piece of equipment that also functions beautifully. I did, however, discover one frustrating detail. When I unscrewed one of the feet to show my relatives the clever hidden spike design, I discovered that the hole in the spike was not large enough to insert the included 5/32 allen key into to unscrew It. What really puzzles me is that, when I removed all three feet this morning, I discovered that the holes in the other two feet are significantly larger and do fit the 5/32 allen key with room to spare. All three holes appear to be finished with a nice countersunk beveled edge, so I don’t think the smaller one wasn’t done being drilled out. I’m hoping the good folks at PMG will send me a replacement to match the two spikes with larger holes since I really only ever carry a 5/32 allen key in my camera bag. As for other stand-out details, the leg adjudtment system at the apex is great. They are easy to use even with gloves on this morning. I have yet to try adjusting the tension of the joints (I haven’t figured out what size tiny allen key to use). The twist locks on the legs are also wonderful to look at and, despite all of the machining, have no sharp edges and yet, are very tactile and grippy with or without gloves on. As for the previous reviewer’s comment about the leg extension not being super smooth, I had a similar experience the first couple of times I extended the legs, but I’ve found that it is easily remedied by giving the twist locks another 1/4 turn to fully loosen them. The included bubble level appears well calibrated when the tripod is on level ground. Overall, I am thrilled with these legs. I’m hoping they’ll be the last set I need to buy for many many years. Next up...a Katana Jr. gimbal?
