Q:
What is the purpose of the little spike in the flat plate? It can be raised/lowered with the allen wrench that is magnetically attached to the bottom of the flat plate, so I'm assuming it's designed to help prevent a tripod head or gimbal from rotating once the head is attached to the mounting stud. But is there some other purpose?

A:
The purpose of the spike on the top plate is to push up against the ball head or gimbal attached mounted to the base and lock it more securely. This will, in most cases, assist in having it accidentally not come loose if / when you accidentally lock your pan knob and try a counter-clockwise movement.
